Federal Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
WIC is a federal program which is administered by each state. Overseas, it is administered by Tricare

WIC provides free:

  • Vouchers for certain food items - may be used at any grocery store, including the commissary
  • Health screening
  • Nutrition and health education
  • Breastfeeding support and information
  • Help getting other resources for which your family may be eligible

  • Infants, children under the age of 5, and pregnant or nursing mothers; non-nursing new mothers for up to 6 months after they give birth; single fathers and foster parents may apply for WIC benefits for their infant or qualifying child
  • Meet WIC Federal Income Guidelines, updated annually
  • WIC usually does not include the following when calculating your income: military housing allowances (some states include BAH), OCONUS COLA, combat-related pay, other pays received as a result of the service member’s deployment to an area that has been designated as a combat zone
  • WIC counts a pregnant woman as 2 family members (3 if she is carrying twins)
  • A family whose income exceeds requirements may still be eligible if the woman, her infants, or children are considered nutritionally “at risk” for dietary or medical reasons
  • Apply in the state in which you reside; reapply if you move to another state.  Military families often qualify if spouse is unemployed due to PCS
  • Even if you do not meet eligibility requirements, visit the websites for information, education, and referral purposes
